Template variables

The {{variables}} you can use in example messages and strict templates, who fills each one, and how empty values and edge cases are handled.

Last updated 2026-10-23

In an Agent's Example Messages you can write variables in double braces, such as {{firstName}}. With Strictly follow the template when generating outreach messages turned on, first messages go out exactly as your template, with the variables replaced for each contact.

There are two kinds of variables. Fixed variables are filled by RenewSell straight from the contact or your profile. Any other variable is an AI variable: the Agent writes one sentence for it from what RenewSell researched about the customer.

Fixed variables

VariableFilled withExample
{{firstName}}Contact's first nameAnna
{{lastName}}Contact's last nameMüller
{{fullName}}Contact's full nameAnna Müller
{{title}}Contact's job titleHead of Purchasing
{{role}}Same as {{title}}Head of Purchasing
{{companyName}}Contact's companyGartenwelt GmbH
{{location}}Contact's locationHamburg, Germany
{{employeeName}}Sender name in the Agent's profileLily Chen
{{employeeRole}}Sender role in the Agent's profileExport Sales Manager
{{senderCompany}}Your company nameNingbo Outdoor Co.
{{agentName}}The Agent's nameLily

Click a variable under Variables in the editor to insert it. {{lastName}} and {{fullName}} aren't in that list, but you can type them.

AI variables

Any variable not in the table above is an AI variable, such as {{company_detail}} suggested in the editor, or one you name yourself like {{their_products}}.

  • The Agent writes one sentence of at most 200 characters, in the message language, using only what RenewSell researched about that company.
  • When the research has nothing useful, it writes a neutral, true sentence about the company's name and business. It never makes things up.
  • The variable name is the Agent's hint, so name it after what you want: {{recent_project}} works better than {{x}}.

{{hook}} is a special AI variable. The Agent picks one opening in the outreach-hook order (their LinkedIn post → the company hook → other enriched facts) and writes it as one sentence. See Personalized openings: outreach hooks.

Rules and edge cases

CaseResult
Written as {{first_name}}Same as {{firstName}}; both spellings work
A fixed variable has no value (e.g. no location)The whole line containing it is removed, so no gap is left
The recipient is a shared company address (no person's name, e.g. info@){{firstName}} becomes team, so "Hi {{firstName}}" reads "Hi team"
An AI variable can't be filledThe message isn't sent. A {{…}} placeholder is never sent to a customer
No AI variables in the templateNo AI is used; the template is sent as is
An email template starts with Subject: …That line becomes the subject (variables work there too); the rest is the body
An email template has no Subject: lineA plain English subject is added automatically
Not a first message (invitation note, DM, follow-up, reply)The template isn't applied; the Agent only takes tone and structure from the examples

TIP

Put variables that may be empty, like {{lastName}} or {{location}}, on a line that can disappear without harm, not on the greeting or a key sentence. Give every email template a Subject: line.

Example

Template:

Subject: {{companyName}} × {{senderCompany}}

Hi {{firstName}},

{{hook}}

We make weather-proof rattan sets for European retailers. {{their_products}}

Would a short catalog be useful?

{{employeeName}}
{{employeeRole}}, {{senderCompany}}

Sent to Anna at Gartenwelt GmbH:

Subject: Gartenwelt GmbH × Ningbo Outdoor Co.

Hi Anna,

Saw that Gartenwelt is opening a second showroom in Hamburg this autumn.

We make weather-proof rattan sets for European retailers. Your current range focuses on teak, so rattan could round out the new space.

Would a short catalog be useful?

Lily Chen
Export Sales Manager, Ningbo Outdoor Co.
